Q&A

Does the 90% statistic pertain to abortion minded women in crisis?

It takes into account ALL the women we see which is mostly abortion minded or abortion vulnerable.  On our van almost every girl we saw was abortion minded and we still had about a 90% success rate.

What is reference for this data.

Our center.

Is it your experience at your facilities in San Antonio or is this a national statistic?

This is about the national average as well.  Most women don’t want to have an abortion and just need to see that someone cares about them and will help them.  Keep in mind though that 90% nationwide of all women who enter an abortion facility have an abortion.  So the key is getting the girl to come to the pregnancy center first BEFORE they enter an abortion facility.  That is why location is so important and why we have to be right there by the abortion facilities.

I have seen numbers ranging from 50% to 70% when you look at abortion minded women seeing an image of their baby.

If a woman just sees an ultrasound with no counseling, then yes the average is about 70%.  Our nurse’s that do the ultrasounds for us are ALSO trained as pregnancy counselors.

What are your top five lessons learned from the purchase and use of the first van?

1) MUST have people on the sidewalk reaching out to the women to lead them to our van. 2)  Must make sure you are in front of the abortion facilities in time to get the best public parking spot available before it is filled.  3) We would have done more visual signs for girls to see about our van BEFORE they approached the abortion facility.  4) Would have incentivized the girls as they approached the abortion facilities with signs that said, “Free gift card with pregnancy test” and “Free gift card with Ultrasound”, etc.  4) Would have gotten a different toilet on the van to make emptying easier.  5)  Would have contacted the abortion facility more often to see what they were telling girls when they called such as “Don’t approach the van outside” or “Whatever you do, don’t talk to the people on the sidewalk”.  That way we would have been more up to speed on our marketing strategy.

800 babies saved in a little over two years translates into one baby per day on average. From the date of introduction of the van to today, what kind of changes have you seen in utilization, staffing, productivity, etc? Did the numbers ramp up significantly as you gained more experience? How do these numbers differ from other pregnancy centers around the country that have the same vans?

So I’ll answer these 3 questions with one answer. Pretty much after the first 2 weeks, we had made adjustments necessary to get girls on our van. That is when we had immediate success that continued until one of the abortion facilities we covered closed permanently. Then we only had 1 abortion facility that we could park in front of because the 3rd abortion facility(that we are currently in the building next to) had nowhere to park the van. The 1 abortion facility we could still park in front of, changed their marketing strategy to not offer walk in’s anymore and only take appointments only. When they made appointments, they were told not to talk to the people on the sidewalk. Well we had a sidewalk strategy to combat that but the main 2 people who had been successful getting girls to our van didn’t want to utilize the new strategy. Thus, we had a drastic reduction in the girls coming to our van to almost zero girls a day. We decided to park the van, do some repairs and other modifications to the van, and regroup. About that time another abortion facility popped up. We figured we could get sidewalk people to utilize the strategy that we wanted to employ at that new abortion facility and then we could park the van there. After many attempts to find a place to park the van near that abortion facility that was close, we were not able to find a parking spot. So we decided to look for a place to lease instead that would be our second office. We found a building and signed a lease a few months ago. We are in the process of renovating. Since we will have an office there, then there is no need to park our van there. So we are currently training sidewalk people to utilize our training methods. Once they are ready to go, we will put them in front of the abortion facility that we used to have our van in front of. Our expectations are that we will have just as much success as we have had before. Ps, we already have trained sidewalk people who have used our strategies in front of the abortion facility that our main office is located. We have gone from seeing about 3-5 girls a day to up to 20 girls a day. So we know that it will work when we start utilizing the van again. The pregnancy centers across the country that have vans make 2 crucial mistakes. 1) They don’t park in front of abortion facilities. Instead they park at church’s, gas stations, schools, and universities. The girls having abortions are going to abortion facilities so that’s where the vans need to be. 2) They don’t have the right or enough sidewalk support. When we put our van on the street without sidewalk support, we literally had zero girls come to our van. Once we had regular sidewalk support, our numbers skyrocketed.

With only one van and two facilities,  you have made significant progress.    Can you share some data on the resources to be applied to two facilities and one van, to eliminate 6000 potential abortions annually, making San Antonio an abortion free city in the very near future?

We already see 3,000+ girls a year at our main office.  Also with our 2nd brick and mortar office, we should do another 1,000+ girls annually. The 2-3 fundraisers we have every year fund our budget and then some.  Basically San Antonio is covered financially. Thank God.

Are you able to reach 100% of the abortion minded women with your two facilities and your one van?

Yes

Are there other pregnancy centers in San Antonio helping with this effort or are you going it alone with your resources?

There are 5 other pregnancy centers in San Antonio.  None of them are in front or next to 1 of the 3 abortion facilities.  So unfortunately they don’t see the abortion vulnerable or abortion minded girls very often.  I have spoken to all of the Executive Directors at those centers and they are happy with where they are at and happy with the girls they see.  In other words, they are satisfied.  God bless them but I am not satisfied.  Too many babies still being killed at the hands of abortion doctors across the country.

Its seems like you are seeing significantly better results than the facilities that I am familiar with. What are the differentiating factors that you have in your facilities that don’t exist in other cities, other than the distance to the facilities?

Making sure that we have a strong sidewalk support system, making sure that we are easily found on the world wide web, and our external marketing on our building ie signs on the building, flag pole signs, etc but again location is by far the number #1 reason we have had so much success.

What is the strategy and the operational disciplines behind what you are doing?

We have a chain of command in place along with policies and procedures that are crucial in making for smooth operations in our centers. That along with absolutely 100% committed staff who know that the executive team has their back no matter what.

How will your national strategy differ from what they are currently doing?

From what I can tell, there is no one in the country trying to get mobile pregnancy center vans in front of every abortion facility in the country. MOST pregnancy centers are a brick and mortar and have only one center. For the most part you will not find any kind of consistency in the pregnancy centers across the country because most are mom and pop shops. That is one of the major problems in the pregnancy center scope. Planned Parenthood operates their facilities like a franchise. There is one objective(to do as many abortions as possible) and there is a clear chain of command. There is a director for each center who reports to a regional director who reports to a national director who reports to the vice president, etc. In the abortion industry, there are a few chiefs and LOTS of Indians. In the pregnancy center industry, there are LOTS of chiefs and very few Indians. That is why we can’t compete with a well-oiled machine like Planned Parenthood. My model changes all of that. One mobile pregnancy center van, same model, same specs, same procedures, same sidewalk strategy, same policies, same mission, etc. We will train every pregnancy center via a online training virtual package that they can access anytime. The training videos will cover fundraising, sidewalk strategies, operational procedures, staffing, etc. This way, we can hand off a mobile pregnancy center van to multiple pregnancy centers at once. We of course would be available for additional questions from the pregnancy centers, but the process will be cookie cutter. Again just like most franchises do it ie McDonalds, Starbucks, Wendy’s, etc. This is the only way we can get out a significant amount of mobile pregnancy center vans on the street as fast and efficiently as possible. There are 700+ abortion facilities in the country.

After you have refined your presentation, how do you plan to raise the funds in conjunction with the pregnancy centers around the country for these vans?

We would order all 8 vans at once, once we raised the money. Once ordered, the vans would be delivered in 9 months. During that time, I would reach out to pregnancy centers to gauge interest in purchasing one of these vans. If the interest was there, I would then offer to help them put on a fundraiser to raise money for the van AND teach them how to meet with individual donors. Once they did all of their fundraising for the van, I would assess their financial situation and let them know the price we would be charging them for the van. Every pregnancy center would be different and charged on a sliding scale. For example, I know a pregnancy center in NJ that already has $100,000 for a van. Based on what I know about the pregnancy centers financials, I would charge them $100,000 for the van and “grant” them $50,000 to cover the rest of the cost of the van. That $100,000 would then be put into getting more vans for other pregnancy centers. Currently I have 6 pregnancy centers that are interested in getting a mobile pregnancy center van from us. The beautiful thing is that because I have trained them on fundraising, they will be able to continue to use my system of fundraising going forward to raise money to operate the van, fund their brick and mortar center, pay for staff, make sure they are open 6 days a week, etc. Most pregnancy centers have no clue how to raise money. That is why they struggle so much financially.

Have you considered how the costs would be shared between the local pregnancy centers and your national organization?

Please see previous answer.

What about the qualifications for a center to participate with you before engaging in helping them to purchase a van?

I would do an assessment of the pregnancy center first to see where they are in regards to financials, operations, policies and procedures, etc. My main concern honestly would be ethics. For example, we have a pregnancy center here in San Antonio that is of the opinion that lying to the girl is ok if it saves a baby. So if a girl calls them and asks if they do abortion, they tell the girl yes so that they can get them in the door. Their staff also wears white coats to give the impression that they are medically licensed. They also do not have any formal training for their staff. These are just some of the examples of unethical practices that I am talking about. If their heart is in the right place and they are coachable, I can help most pregnancy centers.

What is the pace you expect to approach this vision?

I don’t have a pace. As many as possible making sure that we don’t take on more than we can chew. Unfortunately I don’t know what that looks like. Can we roll out 8 vans in 2022, 24 in 2023, 150 in 2024? I don’t know. What I do know is that the outfitter is capable of doing over 100 a year if the funding is there. I also know that with training being automated for the most part for pregnancy centers, we can roll out as many vans as we want.

Here’s my main thought process. Since 1973 Roe vs Wade, there have been about a million abortions committed in this country every year. Almost 50 years later, there are still about a million abortions committed in this country every year. Clearly the prolife movement so far is not employing the right strategies. There is a lot of talk, there are a lot of prolife “EXPERTS”, there are a lot of ideas, there is a lot of confusion, and most of all like I said before, there are a lot of chiefs and not enough Indians. When I came on board in 2013 to A Woman’s Haven, I wanted to see if another strategy would work. I immediately employed the location, location, location strategy in San Antonio and it is obvious that it has worked. Now we need to employ the same strategy nationwide. Be where the abortion girls are going which is the abortion facilities. The mobile pregnancy center van is the most cost effective, efficient, and easily duplicated strategy that I can think of.
